@city_bureau Essentially there are three roles in the police district council: Community Engagement Coordinator, District Council chair, & Nominating committee delegate. Each member is expected to spend 20 hours a month on improving public safety & police accountability in their communities

@city_bureau Meeting has begun at 1:02pm begin on with public comment section

@city_bureau Community member raises concern about district council has not been met with by police council/commissioner. Lack of transparency with the community Ultimately urging for committee to be disbanded.

@city_bureau They also are urging for more helicopters to be utilized during protests for crowd control. This was met with disagreement by another community member who believes that it only helps during the day.

@city_bureau Disbanding of the subcommittee is a central focus of public comment. Community members are unaware whether or not the Community Commission for Public Safety & Accountability in District 14 is a subcommittee & many want it disbanded along with all others

@city_bureau Public comment has ended at 1:14pm.

@city_bureau Meeting minutes from March 2,2024 will be up for vote and approval in May as they have not yet been approved and were set to be voted on today.

@city_bureau Free to Move initiative will hold a banner drop on 35th Ward near Lake Shore Drive to advocate against traffic stops on April 8th

@city_bureau April 13th there will be a trash clean up in Avondale neighborhood as a collaboration between 14th,15th, & 18th police district and community members.

@city_bureau Out of 110 applicants 33 have been nominated to serve on the CCPSA board. Two of which currently are on the board one being Remel Terry from the West Side of Chicago.

@city_bureau A COPA report has been sent out because of a recent intimidation of a migrant woman who was forced move by police officers. This has been a year long investigation along with 5 more COPA investigations surrounding migrants safety and intimidation tactics

@city_bureau Traffic stop reports have been released by Free Move for the 2023. Stops have increased amounting to 550,000 stops have taken place in 2023.

@city_bureau 8% stops for moving violation has tripled to 24% for 2023. As pointed out 1% of traffic stops have little to no response time given.

@city_bureau There is an urging for this data to be posted immediately. It was also brought up that racial disparities still play a role in who gets pulled over.

@city_bureau The question becomes are these traffic stops actually promoting public safety? Police have admitted that many of these stops are pre contextual stop meaning that there is no exact reason for you to be pulled over however police can investigate further & find an issue

@city_bureau A community member shared her personal experience of seeing frequent traffic stops on Fullerton & Kedzie near the highway in which many of those pulled over didn’t have traffic violations. However while this was happening carjackings near Lulu’s Cafe increased dramatically

@city_bureau While stop and frisk has been eradicated on a city level it is still federally legal. In Chicago traffic stops increased by 600% and only 2% of these led to actual arrests

@city_bureau Lack of response to 9-1-1 calls where violence has ensued is an issue that has risen. This creates an issue as to why traffic stops aren’t helpful to public safety. There is essentially 1 police car for every neighborhood when priority 1 calls are made

@city_bureau The room has become tense as Councilor Orlikoff asks for a motion to remove a community member who spoke over the order that he was reading. Motion has now been retracted and Councilor Laurent asks for both council & community keep decorum.

@city_bureau Next order of business is around restorative justice courts. Chicago Appleseed Foundatiom released a report on the program

@city_bureau 13% of the 113 people who completed the restorative justice program faced a re-arrest.

@city_bureau Restorative justice programs are based in neighborhoods to be apart of it one must have committed a non-violent crime.

@city_bureau Sally Hamann is being honored the donation of her Logan Square home to the Chicago Land Trust to promote affordable and safe housing in the city. You can read about her here in @BlockClubCHI article

@city_bureau @BlockClubCHI Motion for amending bylaws for Community Commitees has been approved

@city_bureau @BlockClubCHI Motion for bylaws condemning independent actors falsely claiming to represent the elected 14th District Council & constituents. Motion has been passed
